We are retracing Anthony Arthurs medal treble for England at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester as part of our showcase of classic England Weight ifting moments.
Manchester-born Arthur had a spectacular night under the spotlight in his home city as he won two Silvers and a Bronze in the Men’s 85kg competition.
Arthur, who won Silver in the 94kg Snatch at the Commonwealth Games four years prior in 1998, produced a best lift of 150kgs to clinch second spot in the Snatch. He then placed third in the Clean & Jerk at the age of 29 by lifting 180kg.
His overall total of 330kg was enough to secure him Silver overall behind Cameroon's David Matam who swept the board with three Gold medals to build upon Bronze four years prior.
Samoa's OfisaOfisa took Silver in the Clean & Jerkand Bronze overall, while his compatriot NiusilaOpeloge finished with the Bronze medal in the Snatch.
The group also featured England's Stephen Ward and Wales' Andy Goswell, but both failed to post a score in the Snatch and were out of the medals in the Clean & Jerk.
